Besides the launch of the new MacBook Air laptops, Apple today gave a preview of the company’s upcoming Mac OS X “Lion” operating system.

Inspired by iPad’s software, the eighth major release of OS for Mac computers includes the Mac App Store, support for full screen iPad-like apps, Launchpad, a new home for all of Mac apps, and and Mission Control, which “unifies Exposé, Dashboard, Spaces and full screen apps into an innovative new view of everything running on your Mac, and allows you to instantly navigate anywhere.”

Mac OS X Lion will ship next summer, while the Mac App Store will be available for the current Mac OS X “Snow Leopard” within 90 days.

Apple also introduced today a beta version of FaceTime for Mac which allows Mac users to video call iPhone 4 and iPod touch users, as well as iLife ’11 with major upgrades to iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand applications.
